Please tell the Panel why you would like to be a volunteer design review panel member and your interest in design review, your geographical interest, the skills you have to offer, and any previous design review experience. The cover letter is kept private and confidential and is not shared with any third parties.

Volunteer Panel member terms of reference

By applying to join The Design Review Panel pool of volunteers, you agree to the following terms of reference:

The role

  • Panel pool membership is voluntary. Being a member does not guarantee participation in any design review session; the Panel is not obliged to offer you sessions, and you are free to decline any invitation.
  • Nothing in these terms, or in taking part in a session, creates a contract of employment or a worker relationship with The Design Review Panel (Design Review Ltd). Members typically take part in around three sessions a year, though there is no set commitment.

Sessions and costs

  • The role is unpaid. A fixed contribution towards your out-of-pocket costs — such as travel and parking — is agreed before each session and paid through the Panel’s expenses process. Lunch and refreshments are provided when taking part in a four-hour in-person session.

Taking part

  • Members take part as individuals, contributing personal opinion informed by their professional knowledge and experience. Neither members nor the Panel provide professional advice: the Panel offers independent opinion to support the design process.
  • Members follow the Terms of Reference and the Professional Standards & Code of Conduct published on the Panel’s website, each as updated from time to time, and the seven principles of public life set out in the Nolan Report, ‘Standards in Public Life’.
  • Members declare any conflict of interest when invited to a session and step aside where one exists.
  • Material seen through Panel work — including schemes, drawings and discussions that are not public — is confidential and is not shared or used outside the session.

Professional standing

  • Members remain responsible for meeting the requirements of their own professional bodies, including maintaining their own professional indemnity insurance where required. Participation in the Panel pool is not covered by Design Review Ltd’s insurance arrangements.

Your photo, biography and CV

  • You provide a high-resolution headshot photo, a biography and a PDF CV with your application. If your application is successful, these are displayed on the Panel’s website (www.designreviewpanel.co.uk) and on other social media promoting the Panel, in the interest of openness and accountability.
  • You keep your photo, biography and CV reasonably up to date throughout your pool membership, and you can ask for them to be updated or removed at any time.

Your details

  • Your details are used to assess your application and, if you join the pool, to run your involvement with the Panel, as described in the Panel’s Privacy Policy. Each submission is recorded with a timestamp for audit purposes.
  • As part of pool membership, the Panel keeps in touch by email, including its news and insights mailings. You can unsubscribe from mailings at any time using the link in each email.

Leaving the pool

  • You may leave the pool at any time, and the Panel may end pool membership at any time, in each case by email and without giving a reason. On leaving, your photo, biography and CV are removed from the website.

Typing your name here constitutes your electronic signature. The date and time of signing are recorded automatically.

The Panel reviews every application and will be in touch by email.
